Field Perspective & Terrain

Arusha sits at 1,400 metres above sea level beneath the towering volcanic cone of Mount Meru. With its volcanic soils and temperate climate, it is the agricultural and safari capital of Tanzania.

Many travellers spend a night or two in the quieter suburbs west of the town, toward the national park gates, away from the highway traffic, before heading into the bush.

Taking a quiet day in Arusha before heading into the bush allows your circadian rhythms to settle and your mindset to shift into expedition tempo.

Destination Highlights

  • The usual starting and finishing point for northern safari expeditions
  • Mount Meru (4,562m) standing dramatic sentinel over the coffee plantations
  • Walking safaris and canoe excursions on Lake Duluti and Arusha National Park
  • Vibrant local craft workshops, spice markets, and coffee roasting houses
