Field Perspective & Terrain

Hemmed between the towering 600-metre shear wall of the Gregory Rift and the shallow alkaline waters of Lake Manyara, this jewel-box national park packs remarkable ecological variety into a narrow strip.

As you enter through the northern gate, underground volcanic springs feed an evergreen forest of giant trichilia and mahogany trees. Hornbills and blue monkeys call from above while baboon families play in the dirt roads.

Beyond the forest, the terrain opens into expansive acacia woodland and the open soda lake shore, where pelicans and storks fish in shallow estuaries.

Destination Highlights

  • Legendary tree-climbing lions resting in wild mahogany and fig boughs
  • Baboon troops numbering over two hundred individuals along forest tracks
  • Sulphurous hot springs bubbling out of the earth at Maji Moto
  • Canopy walkway through ancient riverine trees

Lake Manyara Escarpment Bandas

Constructed from natural volcanic rock, local timber, and thatch, these eco-bandas cling to the face of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Looking down upon the silvery alkaline waters of Lake Manyara and its surrounding acacia forest, the view spans forty miles across the African continent. Troops of vervet monkeys and silvery-cheeked hornbills visit the surrounding fig trees. With minimal artificial light, guests sleep with cooling canyon breezes rustling through open screens while thousands of flamingos settle below.
