Field Experience Overview
For five centuries, the tiny island of Zanzibar was known as the Spice Island, supplying the world with black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla.
We drive into the fertile interior farmlands around Kizimbani where smallholder farmers cultivate mixed spice orchards. Our local guide slices tree bark to reveal fragrant cinnamon, digs up fresh ginger roots, and opens green cardamom pods between his fingers.
You will never look at a grocery store spice jar the same way again after tasting nutmeg fresh from its golden fruit or smelling crushed allspice leaves warmed in your palm.
