Perched 2,300 metres above sea level on the eastern rim of the ancient Ngorongoro Caldera, this lodge looks straight down into the volcanic amphitheatre. Moss-draped ancient evergreen forest encloses the stone chalets, where wood-burning fireplaces are lit every evening as mountain temperatures drop. Guests wake to the sight of mist rising off the crater lake below, sipping hot spiced tea while bird calls echo through the canopy. The lodge allows immediate access to the crater descent road at dawn, beating the tourist convoys.
