Set along the quiet northeast coast of Zanzibar facing the protected coral atoll of Mnemba, Matemwe Reef Retreat offers relaxed, barefoot luxury away from package tourism. Whitewashed cottages with high thatched palm roofs catch the trade winds, offering cool sanctuaries shaded by bougainvillea. At low tide, local women farm green seaweed in the shallows, creating a colorful coastal tapestry. At high tide, the Indian Ocean rolls right up to the coral cliff. It is an unhurried haven for snorkelers, divers, and book readers.
Nine days: five days tracking big cats across the savanna, followed by four restorative nights in northern Zanzibar.
